This is a time of year when getting a good workout can be a challenge not only due to the time of year (and weather), but also because of the hectic schedule that many of us keep.

With many people setting New Year’s Resolutions to lose weight, gyms and fitness centers will be extremely crowded.  If that’s the case, it is possible to get a great workout right in your own home.

It is critical that we find a time during the day to get in a workout.  Just as you would schedule a meeting at work, schedule a time for your workout.  You will find yourself refreshed and energized.

While working out at a fitness center or gym is great, finding the time during this time of year can be difficult.  In addition, the weather can often get in the way.  However, if you are able to be outside, take advantage of it.

Here are a few exercise tips that you may find beneficial at the beginning of the year:

Several short exercise activities are great

You don’t have to exercise for an extended period of time in 1 session.  Doing as little as 15 minutes of exercise several times a day (3+) is great. (walking, running, etc.)

A PVC pipe filled with water (3+ ft of 4” diameter pipe) provides a great source of resistance (cap one end and place a screw on cap on the other).  You can do presses, squats, lunges, etc. with this device.  Plus, the instability of the water will work on your core. (3 sets of 10-12 repetitions)

Bungee cords can be used in place of resistance bands

Resistance bands such as those found at sporting goods stores provide a good source of resistance.  However, stretch tubing and bungee cords work almost as well and can be quite a bit cheaper.  You can do presses, squats, curls, etc. with these.  In addition, you can put them in your car and take them with you as you travel.

Feed your body!

With exercise comes the need for nutrients.  Increasing your protein intake can help repair any damage that has been done to your muscles.

Enjoy yourself!

Working out should be fun.  Encourage members of your family (spouse children, parents) to exercise with you.   While watching your favorite game on TV with family may be fun, exercising with your family can have longer lasting benefits.
