In the 1980s, UMHB had a child development center in the house where Digital Media Services is now located (404 West 8th Street). The center offered daycare and kindergarden programs for the children of UMHB students and employees. Tuition was charged for the kindergarden classes, and an hourly fee was charged for children in the daycare division. Home economics majors, education majors, and nursing students worked with the children, doing story hours and checking their vision and hearing. Jessica Karimkhani Gilliam ‘02, whose mom, Denise, is director of learning resources at Townsend Memorial Library, attended the nursery school and kindergarten class, graduating from the program in 1986. Jessica returned to UMHB as an undergraduate fine arts major and graduated the second time in 2002. She was editor of the 2001 Bluebonnet and an “honorary” library student worker.
